World War I

Though not directly involved in much of World War I, the United States nonetheless provided aid and supplies to the countries of Europe. Libraries across the country strove to gather books and other materials that could be sent overseas to the soldiers. Libraries were also heavily involved in promoting the war in this country, as they "looked upon the war as a unique opportunity to harness the power of a state at war to extend their services and clientele and to increase their professional authority" (from Wiegand's article In Service to the State). By whole-heartedly supporting the war effort, librarians hoped to make themselves more recognizable in the eyes of the public, which would lead to increased funding and professional respect.
