In 1860 microphotography was patented by Ren Dagnon and was used during the Franco-Prussian war for sending dispatches to Paris by carrier pigeon. In 1925 George McCarthy invented a camera to use for microfilming checks and the 35mm became the standard in film. Microfilm was used extensively throughout world war one and two for regular mail service as well as archiving and espionage. Throughout the 1950’s and 60’s funding for research into microfilm technology increased. In the 1970’s the invention of the portable lap reader, viewer, and reader-printers allowed libraries an affordable and easy alternate to bulky print copies. In the 1980’s and 90’s computer output microform applications became available.
