Charlotte Zolotow Award

Page history last edited by PBworks 17 years, 10 months ago

Born in 1915, Charlotte Zolotow's connection to the University of Wisconsin-Madison began when she attended the school from 1933-1936, as a writing student of Professor Helen C. White. She went on to become an editor at Harper Junior Books in New York where she edited and worked with many well-known authors in children's literature, including M.B. Goffstein, Hazel Rochman, Laurence Yep, Francesca Lia Block and many others. During her time at Harper Junior, she also authored more than 70 classic children's picture books, including The Park Book (1944), Mr. Rabbit and the Lovely Present __(1962), __William's Doll (1972), Something Is Going to Happen (1988), and __Who Is Ben__? (1997).

Zolotow strongly believed that there was a gap in the current award offerings for children's book authors, especially in regard to the two biggest awards: the Newbery and the Caldecott. Zolotow was frustrated that the Newbery awarded excellence in books and writing for older children, and books for younger children only received awards based on the pictures and illustrations.

Ginny Moore Cruse and Kathleen T. Horning, both of UW-Madison's Cooperative Children's Book Center, began collaborating in an attempt to create an award that would honor Zolotow's work as both an editor and a writer. In 1998, they established the Charlotte Zolotow Award, which is given annually to the author of the best picture book text published in the United States in the preceding year. Each year, the Committee selects one winner. They also have the option of choosing up to three honor books and up to ten "highly commended" titles. The CCBC website contains a complete list of the winners.
