1970 - The first Coretta Scott King Award for excellence in children's literature by an African-American author or illustrator is bestowed to Lillie Patterson, for her book Martin Luther King, Jr., Man of Peace.

 

1970 - The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgendered Round Table of the American Librarian Association is founded.

 

1970 - The Black Caucus of the American Library Association is founded.

 

1970 - 3M Library Systems installs the first 'tattle tape' system at St. Paul Public Library.

 

1971 - Project Gutenberg begins.

 

1971 - Sanford Berman's Prejudices and Antipathies: A Tract on the LC Subject Heads Concerning People is published.

 

1971 - Celeste West and Elizabeth Katz Release the anthology Revolting Librarians

 

1972 - The Reference and Adult Services Division (RASD) of the American Library Association is formed.

 

1974 - ALA establishes National Library Legislative Day

 

1976 - Clara Stanton Jones became the 1st African-American to serve as president of the American Library Association

 

1977 - The Cooperative Children's Book Center, a research library of the University of Wisconsin-Madison's School of Education with a collection exclusively of children's and young adult's books and materials, begins its Intellectual Freedom Services for teachers and librarians around the state of Wisconsin.
