1911 - Theresa Elmendorf becomes first female president of the American Library Association.

 

1914 - Future esteemed librarian and educator Margaret Monroe born.

 

1915 - Legislation establishing the Congressional Research Service at the Library of Congress is partially written by Dr. Charles McCarthy.

 

1915 - Harvard's Harry Elkins Widener Memorial Library opens

 

1916 - Henry Eduard Legler, chief librarian at the Chicago Public Library, proposes a comprehensive branch system for the library.

 

1918-1919 - Librarians go to extraordinary efforts to to help the World War I cause.
