Previous decade: 1800s

 

 

1813 - Federal Depository Library Program began.

 

1814 - Invading British troops set fire to the Capitol Building, completely destroying the interior of the Library of Congress

 

1814 - One month later in September (post fire) Thomas Jefferson offers his personal library as a replacement.

 

Jan. 1815 - Congress accepts Jefferson's 6,487 books to establish a "new" Library that will become the basis for the development of the Library of Congress. Congress purchases his private library for $23, 950. It is shipped in May.

 

1819 - University of Virginia
