RLG - Research Libraries Group

The RLG was founded in 1974 by Columbia, Yale, Harvard, and the New York Public Library, in order to encourage and support shared research and resources. The start of the group is viewed as surprising and bold, so much so that the New York Times wrote, "a sweeping and controversial program of combined operations."

Over the years they grew as more research libraries from large universities joined them, as did major museums from across the country. To date the group consists of more than 150 "research libraries, archives, museums and other cultural memory institutions" from various countries. They are a non-profit organization.

Among other things that RLG does, it runs the RLIN (Research Libraries Information Network) Union Catalog, which covers materials in over 400 languages.

Some other notable RLG projects and programs are as follows:

-Created and introduced Ariel, a computer program used for document transmission and one of the major pieces Interlibrary Loan software.

-Work to increase open access databases

-Work on digital preservation

-Work on digitizing archives

-Creation of http://www.redlightgreen.com , a free online Union Catalog, which additionally helps students by creating citations in different formats.

-Increased sharing of resources around the world

They list their three main ongoing goals:

  • Digital Preservation & Ensured Long-term Access
  • Expanded Online Access to Research Resources
  • Global Resource Sharing

These goals are obviously a motivating force behind what has led to their plan to combine with OCLC Online Computer Library Center in the summer of 2006.
