The Boston Public Library was founded in 1848 as the first publicly supported library in a major US city. It opened to the public in 1854.
As of 2004, the Boston Public Library held 14,933,349 volumes in its collection. This makes it the third largest library in the US, after the Library of Congress and the Harvard University Library. (ALA Library Fact Sheet 22)
