1900s

 

 

1902 - SuDoc Classification System developed for Federal documents. The woman who set it up, Adelaide Hasse, also managed to catalog all the documents pulled from hither and yon in 6 months!

 

1904 - The Haskell Free Library and Opera House on Rock Island opened on June 7th, 1904. The library is known as the "only library in America with no books"!

 

1905 - Gratia Alta Countryman receives her appointment as chief librarian for the Minneapolis Public Library.

 

1905 - The Wisconsin State Legislature passed enabling legislation for the Wisconsin Library School.

 

1905 - The first Public Library on wheels

 

1905 - American Library Association Conference in Portland

 

1906 - The Wisconsin Library School (see 1895) became a year-round school. The Carnegie Foundation was persuaded to add money to that promised to build the Madison Public Library, and the School moved into the MPL's second floor, where it remained until 1938.

 

1909 - The Special Libraries Association (SLA) is founded.
